A decisive blow to drug trafficking in Girona
In one of the largest operations against drug trafficking in recent Catalonia history, the Mossos d’Esquadra have carried out a massive deployment resulting in the arrest of 26 individuals and the dismantling of eleven marijuana plantations. This operation, which began in the early hours of the day, involved more than 600 agents, who conducted simultaneous searches in a dozen municipalities.
The operation focused on dismantling a criminal organization based in the province of Girona, known for its dedication to indoor marijuana cultivation and the illegal distribution of narcotics. Additionally, authorities were investigating this network for crimes related to illegal possession of firearms and money laundering.
Throughout the day, the Mossos carried out a total of 27 searches in locations such as Girona, Cassà de la Selva, L’Escala, among others. Although details about the seized firearms or the exact amounts of money found have not yet been revealed, it is known that both short and long firearms have been confiscated.
This operation not only responds to an increase in criminal activity related to drug trafficking but also to a worrying rise in shootings linked to gang-related settling of scores. In particular, the neighbourhood where several searches were conducted has recently been a scene of violence; during last year’s San Juan night, two people were murdered and others were seriously injured.
Despite the initial success of the operation, the Mossos have pointed out that this type of violence is becoming normalised. Just two weeks ago, twelve Kalashnikov rifles were seized during a police intervention on the AP-7 motorway near Figueres. This type of weaponry is commonly used by organized groups dedicated to illegal trafficking.
As this investigation progresses, it is clear that the impact goes beyond the police realm; it directly affects local communities suffering the consequences of drug trafficking. The Catalan police have emphasised their commitment to continue combating these criminal organizations and restoring public safety.
As more evidence and testimonies about this criminal network are gathered, the Mossos d’Esquadra are determined to continue their efforts to eradicate drug trafficking in Girona and its surroundings. Collaboration between different units within the police force has proven crucial for carrying out such complex operations.
