The value of the urban furniture damaged in Saturday's riots amounts to 36,000 euros, according to the mayor. The Urban Guard and the Mossos are investigating the events and there are already 128 detainees.

The urban furniture burnt during the riots last Saturday in Barcelona is valued at 36,000 euros, as estimated by the mayor, Jaume Collboni. The councillor also confirmed that there are 128 detainees, and that 56 percent are minors. For this reason, it will be their parents who will have to face the consequences.

In an interview on Cadena SER, Collboni described the events as senseless violence that did not respond to a protest, but rather to a mobilisation promoted on social media, particularly TikTok. According to the mayor, the investigation is already underway, and he urged people to observe who is celebrating what happened.

“We need to look at who is celebrating and infer who might be behind it”

Collboni was scheduled to meet on Monday with the merchants affected by the riots and looting. The Gremi de Restauració de Barcelona claims it had not been invited and attributes the lack of invitation to the criticisms that their entity made regarding the police operation.

The general director of the guild, Roger Pallarols, considered on Sunday that the police response “was not up to par.” Meanwhile, the director of Barcelona Oberta, Elvira García, spoke of “disappointment, frustration, and a lot of sadness” and demanded compensation for the damages, as well as a direct information channel between the Mossos d'Esquadra and the establishments.

The business association Pimec Comerç condemned the riots and looting and called for an extraordinary aid plan to repair the damages, compensate for the days of forced closure, and resume activity as soon as possible. Its president, Mònica Gregori, called for a “quick and effective” response.

“Merchants should not end up paying the consequences of vandalistic acts of which they are victims”

Among the measures proposed by Pimec Comerç are emergency direct aid, compensation for closures, discounts or refunds of unused municipal fees, and a single office to process insurance claims, complaints, assessments, and aid requests.
