Barcelona's mayor, Jaume Collboni, warns that the parents of the minors involved in Saturday's riots will have to answer for the damages. There were 128 arrests, 73 of whom were minors.
Barcelona's mayor, Jaume Collboni, has announced that the Barcelona City Council will take legal and financial action against those responsible for the destruction. The measures will not be limited to adult participants but will also extend to the parents of the minors involved.
“They should not think that this will go unpunished, nor that this is just a prank.”
Collboni made these statements at an urgent press conference alongside the Minister of Interior, Núria Parlon, following the incidents that occurred on Saturday around Plaza de Catalunya. According to the report communicated by Parlon, the riots resulted in 128 arrests, of which 73 are minors.
Parlon also reported that 14 commercial establishments suffered vandalism and that the Firefighters had to intervene at 33 fire points. The damages affected both private businesses and urban furniture in the city centre.
One of the specific measures is that the City Council will take legal action to claim for the damaged public goods. The institution wants to hold accountable both the perpetrators and the legal guardians of the minors.
Collboni rejected the idea that the incidents could be justified as a form of protest. He defended the right to demonstrate but made it clear that it cannot translate into destruction, intimidation, or looting.
“What happened today in Barcelona is gratuitous violence and vandalism.”
The mayor distanced the riots from the encampment for the right to housing set up in Plaza de Catalunya. Parlon agreed with the condemnation and expressed the support of the Department of Interior for the actions promoted by the city council. For the residents of the city centre, the judicial follow-up of the events will remain open in the coming weeks.
