A step forward in local security
Gavà, a town located in Baix Llobregat, has taken an important step towards modernising its security system by integrating the Lectio system, which allows for the automatic reading of vehicle number plates. This advancement makes Gavà the first city with a local police force to adopt this technology, representing a significant change in how infractions are managed and surveillance is coordinated.
The Gavà City Council has announced that it will provide the Mossos d’Esquadra with a total of 25 cameras initially, with plans to add 34 more throughout the year. This collaboration aims to improve not only the detection and prevention of crimes but also to facilitate a more agile response to critical situations. The Minister of Interior and Public Security, Núria Parlon, has highlighted the relevance of the agreement by stating that it will allow for an “increasingly effective video protection system” for both municipalities with local police and those without.
Mayor Gemma Badia has emphasised the pioneering role that Gavà plays in security matters. According to Badia, this agreement is a clear demonstration of how “security is worked on and guaranteed with rigor, responsibility, and coordination.” The implementation of the Lectio system not only promises to optimise available resources but also to establish a model for other municipalities to follow.
The City Council has informed that the Lectio system will be complemented by a new management platform that will further enhance the service. Additionally, there is an intention to connect the cameras installed in the patrol vehicles of the Mossos d’Esquadra to the system. This will allow for broader and more effective coverage within the municipality.
As Gavà moves towards this new technological era, it is expected that citizens will feel an increase in their sense of security. The integration of the Lectio system is seen as a key tool to combat petty crime and improve the overall quality of the urban environment. With this proactive approach to public safety, Gavà sets a valuable precedent for other Catalan cities.
