A new outbreak of swine fever in wild boars
The health situation in Catalonia is complicated by the recent detection of a new outbreak of African swine fever. The Official Veterinary Services have reported three additional cases in wild boars found dead, specifically in the municipalities of Sant Cugat and Sant Just Desvern, which are located within a high-risk restricted area. This outbreak, first identified last November in Bellaterra, has led authorities to take drastic measures to contain its spread.
Since November 28, the total number of reported outbreaks has reached 42, including three primary and 39 secondary. In total, 241 cases have been recorded in ten municipalities: Cerdanyola del Vallès, Sant Cugat del Vallès, Sant Quirze del Vallès, Terrassa, Rubí, Molins de Rei, Sant Feliu de Llobregat, Sant Just Desvern, Barcelona, and Sabadell. The rapid spread of the virus has raised concerns among experts and local authorities.
In response to this health crisis, the Government has deployed an unprecedented operation to eradicate the disease. In the last week, 268 wild boars have been captured within the infected areas. Since the beginning of the year, over 26,000 captures have been recorded across Catalonia. To maximize the effectiveness of population control, traps and perimeter closures covering more than 45 kilometers have been installed.
The operation involves the active participation of various entities such as Rural Agents and Mossos d'Esquadra. This weekend, 26 drives were carried out with the collaboration of more than 500 hunters and their dogs. Additionally, canine units from Madrid and other regions are supporting ground efforts to ensure constant surveillance.
Authorities insist that it is crucial for citizens to respect the current restrictions in the affected areas. They are asked not to feed wild boars or leave waste outdoors that could attract them. In the event of spotting dead or sick animals, they must immediately contact the relevant service.
The effective containment of the outbreak will depend on the joint effort between authorities and citizens.
