Joint operation in Mataró
On Friday, October 22, Mataró, known as the capital of Maresme, became the scene of an important police operation under the Kanpai Plan. This initiative aims primarily to combat repeat offender crime in the metropolitan area of Barcelona. This time, the security forces involved were the Mossos d’Esquadra, the Local Police, and the National Police.
The result was decisive: six people were arrested and approximately thirty administrative complaints were processed. Officers conducted inspections in 12 bars and carried out checks at strategic points in Mataró, including nightlife areas and the train station. Of the administrative complaints, 20 were related to possession of narcotic substances and 10 for illegal possession of firearms.
Among those arrested were individuals accused of various crimes. One was detained for stealing a mobile phone, another for making threats, and a third for a public health offence. Additionally, one person linked to a vehicle burglary with an outstanding warrant was arrested. Another detainee had three pending warrants, while the sixth faced charges of assault.
This operation is an integral part of the Kanpai Plan, which seeks not only to reduce crime rates but also to improve coordination among different police forces. According to recent data provided by the Spanish Government, crimes related to repeat offending have decreased by 40% during the first months of 2026 across the metropolitan area.
Although Barcelona is the epicentre of the plan, Mataró has been identified as a key locality for implementing specific actions against criminal networks. Collaboration between the Mossos d’Esquadra and local police is essential to maintain constant pressure on repeat offenders.
The recent operation reinforces this proactive approach to citizen security and demonstrates the ongoing commitment to reducing crime in Mataró. Authorities aim not only to dismantle criminal networks but also to increase the perception of safety among its residents.
