Incident in the industrial estate
The tranquility of the Montmeló industrial estate was interrupted on the night of last Friday when a methanol leak at the Ecomotion Biodiesel plant prompted authorities to take immediate action to ensure the safety of workers and nearby residents. At 21:00 hours, the fire brigade and the Local Police established a security perimeter of 200 meters due to the presence of toxic vapours that could pose a risk to public health.
Despite the initial scare, the authorities acted swiftly. Eight emergency service units were deployed in the area to control the situation. Fortunately, no injuries or need for medical assistance were reported, allowing teams to focus on containing the incident without further complications.
After approximately three hours of intensive work, the authorities managed to resolve the leak and lift the confinement around midnight. The situation was carefully monitored, and the Plaseqcat alert level was subsequently reduced to pre-alert, confirming that there was no longer any danger from the toxic vapours.
In the midst of the incident, Civil Protection issued preventive recommendations for citizens. Residents were advised to close doors and windows as a precaution against any possible discomfort caused by the vapours. This recommendation extended beyond the initially established perimeter, ensuring that all residents were protected during the event.
Despite the incident, the rapid response from local services has been well received by the community. Neighbours expressed their relief at knowing that there were no injuries and that the authorities acted effectively in a potentially dangerous situation.
