The Mossos d'Esquadra have arrested a man in Sant Sadurní d'Anoia accused of coordinating the riots and looting on October 24 in Barcelona via the internet. The investigation remains open to identify more individuals involved.
The Mossos d'Esquadra have detained a man in Sant Sadurní d'Anoia, in the Alt Penedès, who is attributed with coordinating the disturbances and looting that occurred in Barcelona at the end of October. According to the Catalan police, the arrested individual promoted the acts through the digital channel BLOCUS Barcelona.
According to the police investigation, the platform operated as a virtual command centre. From there, the detainee encouraged other users to use violence and explicitly pointed out which areas and shops in the city should be attacked.
The response from the Govern was swift. The president of the Generalitat, Salvador Illa, expressed on his social media account X to highlight the work of the security forces.
“We were very clear: there will be no impunity for the acts of violence and vandalism on October 24 in Barcelona.”
Illa emphasised the essential role of the Catalan police in locating the instigators of the disturbances, according to his message.
The arrest does not close the case. The Catalan Government asserts that institutions want to bring to justice all those who participated actively or logistically in the disorder, and investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend the remaining responsible parties.
“We will continue to act decisively so that anyone who commits a crime faces the consequences.”
For the residents of Barcelona, the news means that the investigation into the looting of October 24 is still open and that new arrests may arise. The Mossos d'Esquadra have not yet announced a date for further arrests.
