Mossos d'Esquadra urge their agents to heighten precautions from Friday, October 23 to Monday, October 26. This measure responds to messages inciting attacks on police and protesters.

Messages disseminated on channels linked to Islamic State incite attacks on police and protesters during the mobilisations called for this weekend in Barcelona and other parts of Spain. The Prefecture of the Mossos d'Esquadra has responded with an internal communication that reinforces the security and self-protection measures for the agents.

The document, sent on Friday by the commissioner responsible for the Executive Sub-Directorate of the Prefecture, calls for heightened precautions during the services scheduled between Friday, October 23 and Monday, October 26. It also reminds that Spain remains at level 4 out of 5 on the anti-terrorism alert scale.

According to the document itself, it is “of vital importance” that the informational meetings prior to each shift remind agents of the security and self-protection measures outlined in the body’s protocols.

For the weekend operations, the Prefecture insists on keeping the preventive measures of the Specific Operational Plan and other current procedures active. Before each service, agents must review the operational instructions and check the condition of their protection and communication equipment.

During the services, the personnel will need to pay special attention to their surroundings and coordinate with each other. They must also report any incidents or unusual situations through the usual channels, and relay relevant information at the end of each shift to those taking over the next services.

For citizens, the reinforcement translates into a visible deployment at gatherings and on the streets during the weekend, with restrictions and closures that each event may require. Neighbours who see an unusual situation can alert 112.
