Two young men from Barcelona and Manresa were falsely identified on social media as perpetrators of a crime in Burgos with no connection to the case. The Catalan police are now investigating who published the hoax.
The Mossos d'Esquadra have launched an investigation into the false attribution of the murder of an 83-year-old woman in Burgos, which occurred on October 14, to two young men who had nothing to do with the case. This was confirmed on Thursday by sources from the Catalan police.
The individuals affected are Ahmed Benyahia, a 20-year-old student from Barcelona, and Youssef Abraoui, a 29-year-old taxi driver from Manresa. Both appeared in a post that identified them as Mohammed Chekraoui, aged 16, and Ayoub Haiboub, aged 17, and labelled them as guilty.
The message, disseminated by a profile on X named Álex Martínez at 15:52 hours on a Saturday, reported a supposed arrest of two minors and included photographs of the two young men from Barcelona and Manresa. According to the police, the news was false from the outset.
The complaint was filed by Ahmed Benyahia, who reported it the same night at a police station in Barcelona. The investigation by the Mossos was initiated following that complaint.
The hoax spread through accounts with tens of thousands of followers, including those of Núcleo Nacional, Revuelta, and the media outlet El Imperial España. These accounts shared the information across various platforms.
Youssef Abraoui is also preparing his own complaint with the Mossos and is gathering posts related to the case. Both want to take the matter to court to dismantle the hoax and identify those responsible. So far, neither knows for certain who wrote the original message, although they are receiving tips from individuals and journalists investigating the posts.
