The Barcelona City Council has allocated 10,000 euros from the municipal budget to the organisation of the Cursa i Caminada Populars Lluís Companys, a sporting event that will occur on Saturday, October 24 at the Estadio J. Serrahima de Montjuïc. The municipal contribution is in addition to that of other institutions, such as the Diputación de Barcelona and the Generalitat de Catalunya, which are also listed as sponsors on the event's poster.
The president of the municipal group of VOX in the council, Gonzalo de Oro, has harshly questioned this budget allocation. In statements released by the party, De Oro stated:
“This waste is a true disgrace, yet another from Jaume Collboni and the PSC, the Separatist Party of Catalonia.”
The councillor also condemned the use of taxpayer funds “to pay tribute to a murderer like Lluís Companys, who was complicit in a period of political violence that, according to numerous historical studies, resulted in the deaths of more than 8,000 people.” These statements come amid a political debate regarding the use of public resources for events with symbolic significance.
From VOX, they argue that the promotional poster confirms the official sponsorship of the Barcelona City Council, the Diputación de Barcelona, and the Generalitat de Catalunya, and they consider it a sectarian use of the institutions. The party demands the immediate withdrawal of all financial and institutional support for the event.
The race, which combines competitive running and a popular walk, is held in the context of the Diada and has open registrations for residents who wish to participate. The event will take place on October 24 at the Estadio J. Serrahima, on the Montjuïc mountain, and currently retains the support of the involved administrations.
