In contrast, the participation of the national audience grew significantly, rising from 3% to 30%.
Moreover, locals from Barcelona represented 34% of the attendees, indicating a strong local interest in religious and cultural events. Carlos Martínez, director of AI and Data at Telefónica Tech, commented: "We are contributing to the digitalisation of businesses and public administrations with more and better services that allow for the scaling of transport services according to real needs".
Not only did the Sagrada Família experience notable changes; the Lluís Companys Stadium also saw a 126% increase in its usual activity due to a vigil held that same week. This increase reflects how special events can temporarily transform normal mobility patterns in key areas like Montjuïc.
Carlos Martínez added: «With our Smart Steps platform, we analyse crowd mobility and are contributing to improving the citizen experience».
As these events attract more local and international visitors, significant logistical challenges arise. The Smart Steps tool revealed that during the papal event, the streets around the papamobile route experienced an 83% increase compared to any other normal day.
