The iconic Boqueria market in Barcelona, recognised as one of the most important markets in the world, has launched a new initiative to encourage visits from local residents. Jordi Mas, president of the market vendors, stated that the goal is for every Catalan to visit this iconic place at least once a year. The campaign, called “Projecte 8 milions”, aims to highlight the importance of the market not only as a tourist spot but as a vital space for the community.

A unique space in the heart of Barcelona

With an annual footfall of 25 million visitors, La Boqueria has established itself as a symbol of Barcelona's culture. Mas emphasises that the market is more than just a shopping place; it is an integral part of the essence and daily life of the city. “The local market gives us a lot of ‘life’ and that’s why we tell residents that from 9 to 11 ‘the market is yours’,” Mas commented, suggesting that the early hours of the day are ideal for enjoying a less crowded atmosphere.

The market features 4,500 square metres dedicated to sales on its main floor and an equivalent space underground for logistics. This infrastructure allows for a constant flow of fresh and local products, which is essential for its ongoing success. La Boqueria not only attracts international tourists but also those seeking quality and authenticity in their daily shopping.

Despite its rich history, La Boqueria continues to evolve. The president highlights that they have received requests for advice even from other renowned markets like the Mercado de San Miguel in Madrid. “It is essential to select the best operators and professionals,” Mas stated about how to ensure the quality and sustainability of the market.

As summer approaches, this campaign is expected to further boost local visits. With initiatives like “Projecte 8 milions”, the aim is not only to increase the total number of visitors but also to strengthen the bond between Barcelonians and their most emblematic market.

To complement this strategy, Jordi Mas has also launched a video podcast titled ‘Mas Barcelona’, available on popular platforms like Spotify and YouTube. This space aims to bring citizens even closer to the heart of the market through stories and relevant information about local products and culinary traditions.

Throughout its history, La Boqueria has witnessed the cultural and social development of Barcelona. From its beginnings to becoming a global reference among gastronomic markets, it remains a place where entire generations dedicated to local commerce converge. With this new focus on local Barcelonians, there is hope to revitalise interest in this iconic space throughout the year.
