Occupancy Expectations in the Costa Brava and Barcelona
This year's Easter promises to be a resounding success for the tourism sector in the Costa Brava, Costa Daurada, and Barcelona. With hotel occupancy ranging between 65% and 90%, the Catalan coastal destinations benefit from a favourable calendar, as the festivities fall two weeks earlier than in 2022. This temporal shift has allowed establishments to open their doors early, reaching over 80% of their capacity.
One of the main attractions driving this influx is the international football tournament MIC, which will bring together more than 8,500 children aged 9 to 12, along with their families and companions. This event will not only attract local visitors but also a large number of international tourists, especially from southern France, further increasing occupancy in the Selva region.
Not only the coasts are seeing an increase in their tourist activity; the Terres de l’Ebre and the interior of Camp de Tarragona are also reporting promising figures. These areas are expected to exceed 80% occupancy, with a particular interest in rural houses and campsites. These options are becoming increasingly popular among Catalan families looking to enjoy the natural surroundings during the festivities.
The general director of the Gremi d’Hotels de Barcelona, Manel Casals, has indicated that the city expects occupancy similar to previous years, around 85%. Despite the complicated international context due to the conflict in the Middle East, Casals assures that its impact has been “little widespread” so far. This suggests a remarkable resilience in the Barcelona tourism sector in the face of external crises.
The predominant profile among visitors is the Catalan customer primarily from the metropolitan area of Barcelona. They are mostly families with young children, who seek to enjoy both the festive atmosphere and outdoor recreational activities.
As Easter approaches, tour operators are optimistic about projections for the summer. The combination of sporting events and a diversified offer could establish Catalonia as one of the preferred destinations for family holidays in Spain.
