The Generalitat confirms the birth of five wolf cubs from a pair in Alt Empordà and La Garrotxa. This is the second litter of the pair in Catalan territory.
According to diariosigloxxi.com, the Ministry of Interior, through the Agents Rurals, has confirmed the birth of five wolf cubs in Catalonia. They come from the pair that inhabits between Alt Empordà and La Garrotxa, in Girona, which in 2025 had already raised three cubs, the first born in Catalan territory in over 100 years.
The pack now consists of two adults, two subadults born last year, and the five cubs from this year. This information was disclosed by the Generalitat in a statement this wednesday.
One of the young ones has not been seen in recent checks, so it may have started to become independent or may have disappeared. The other two that remain with the pack have been identified as a male and a female.
On another note, the Ministry of Territory, Housing and Ecological Transition is finalising the Species Recovery Plan, required by regulations for a species classified as endangered. The text will be discussed with all stakeholders in several sessions of the Wolf Table, the dialogue body regarding its management.
The department plans to submit the plan for public consultation in early 2027, allowing neighbours, farmers, and organisations to present their objections at that time.
The platform Grup Llop Catalunya has praised the establishment of a second litter in a statement.
“Excellent news” for ecosystems and for rural communities
According to the entity, the stable presence of wolves helps reduce damage from wildlife to crops and decreases the risk of wild animal diseases reaching livestock. It adds that the Generalitat's policies for the coexistence of large carnivores with rural activities are on the right track.
The presence of wolves in Catalonia has been continuous since 2000, with solitary specimens arriving from France, part of the natural expansion of the Italian population that colonised the French Alps in 1992.
