Alert for Adverse Weather Conditions in Catalonia
The Civil Protection Service of the Generalitat has issued an alert through the Es Alert system, urging citizens to limit their mobility in six counties in northern Catalonia. This measure responds to the forecast of a strong windstorm that will begin tonight and peak between 8:00 AM and 8:00 PM on Sunday.
Imma Solé, deputy director of Civil Protection, has confirmed that the affected counties include Solsonès, Berguedà, northern Cerdanya, Ripollès, Garrotxa, and Alt Empordà. According to the meteorological service Meteocat, wind gusts are expected to exceed 90 kilometres per hour, especially in mountainous areas.
In addition to the wind, heavy snowfall is anticipated on the northern slope of the Pyrenees, with accumulations ranging from 30 to 40 centimetres. This phenomenon could generate dangerous blizzards in some areas. Furthermore, the Costa Brava will face a maritime storm with waves exceeding 2.5 metres and a high level of danger.
In light of this adverse situation, Civil Protection has activated its territorial plan Procicat and the Ventcat plan to manage wind-related emergencies. Solé has called for caution: "We ask everyone to avoid unnecessary outings this weekend."
The situation will also impact public transport. Renfe has announced that train services will be interrupted on specific sections during the early hours of Sunday. The R3 lines (between Vic and Ripoll) and R11 (between Figueres and Portbou) will not operate until at least 1:00 PM due to the risks associated with strong winds.
To mitigate inconveniences, Renfe will implement an alternative bus service on these affected sections. Users are advised to follow the recommendations issued by Civil Protection to ensure their safety.
Authorities have suggested several preventive measures in light of these extreme weather conditions. It is recommended to secure loose items on façades, avoid garden areas where branches may fall, and increase caution while driving. In particular, it is advised not to approach breakwaters or promenades due to dangerous waves.
In mountainous areas, it is crucial to remain within designated areas such as ski slopes to avoid risks associated with avalanches or unexpected falls.
