The mayor of Barcelona demands instruments and resources for urban policies at the BCN Desperta forum. He defends the right to stay and the end of tourist rentals by 2028.
The mayor of Barcelona, Jaume Collboni, has asked European institutions this Wednesday for more instruments and funds so that local governments can develop the urban policies that citizens need. He made this request during the inaugural day of the fourth edition of the BCN Desperta forum, where he highlighted the role of mayors in the transformation of major capitals.
Collboni reminded that mayors are the first to understand the citizens' demands that affect daily life and pointed out that Barcelona is currently undertaking major transformation projects that require public funding.
Housing has been a significant focus of his speech. The mayor defended the right of residents to stay and emphasized that Barcelona has been implementing housing law for the past two years. In this regard, he highlighted that the elimination of tourist rentals in 2028 will result in the return of 10,000 homes to the residential market.
Regarding the housing decree, Collboni insisted on the need to limit speculative funds, a measure that, he said, is already being applied in the city.
"Many investment funds have understood that the rules of the game are changing. We are not against investment, but we want to decide which is good for the city"
The mayor also called for generosity and a broad vision to achieve parliamentary majorities that allow for the promotion of measures against speculation.
Politically, he asserted the role of world capitals governed by progressive forces as beacons of democratic resistance against the far right.
