The president of the Generalitat stands united with Sánchez and fully engages in the general election campaign. The PSC aims to surpass the record of 25 deputies from 2008 and become decisive in Madrid.
The PSC is already working with its sights set on the general elections. Although the campaign committee was established this week, the Catalan socialists are confident that President Salvador Illa will fully engage in Pedro Sánchez's campaign, as reported by elperiodico.com. The goal is for Catalunya to once again be crucial for the PSOE to remain in power at Moncloa.
Illa, who did not want an early election, has rallied behind the Prime Minister's decision once it was concluded that the legislature had run its course. The head of the Catalan Executive, Sánchez's main ally within socialism, will balance his governmental agenda with the campaign to support the socialist candidate.
In addition to the rallies that Sánchez will hold in Catalunya, the PSC hopes Illa will play a prominent role in the contest. The party recalls that the Catalan socialists have been among the strongest supporters of the president in recent years and now expect that support to translate into votes.
The challenge set by the PSC is to surpass the historic record of 25 deputies achieved in 2008. Three years ago, with Meritxell Batet as the candidate, the socialists won in Catalunya with 19 deputies, a result that was key for Sánchez to remain in power.
"He has encouraged the executive to clearly improve the results of 2023. The president believes that the PSC has room to continue growing"
Sources close to Illa explain that the president believes that the 19 deputies in 2023 "are not the ceiling" for the party and has called for a "historic result". To achieve this, the PSC will play the card that the Catalan vote will once again be decisive in stopping a government of PP and Vox.
The message that the socialists will repeat is that the real dilemma is between "moving forward or backward", between "democracy or authoritarianism". Illa will also focus his speech on aligning Junts with PP and Vox when pointing out the detractors of housing policies.
Close sources to the president assert that he is particularly "disappointed" with the actions of Carles Puigdemont's party just as amnesty has been applied to them. The PSC is convinced that the open judicial cases against Sánchez's family members are related to having pushed for the exoneration of the leaders of the procés and having negotiated with the independence supporters.
The PSC's goal is for Sánchez to govern again without depending on Junts to achieve it. However, there is concern about what may happen to their left. The socialists will repeat that they are the useful vote, but they need to be able to add up. Therefore, they are closely monitoring movements both in the Frente Amplio and in ERC.
A campaign with Ada Colau and Gabriel Rufián as candidates, who could hinder the goal of surpassing 25 deputies, is not the same as one without them. Especially if housing is one of the central axes of the campaign, an area where Illa will claim that his Govern is the one "doing the most".
