The Minister of Transport, Óscar Puente, states that he likes Salvador Illa a lot as a possible successor to Pedro Sánchez. He said this on the show Cara al Show on laSexta, without setting any deadlines.
The Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, Óscar Puente, has placed Salvador Illa, leader of the PSC, among the names that could succeed Pedro Sánchez if the President of the Government were to leave politics. This was reported by laSexta, which captured the conversation during a buggy ride with presenter Marc Giró on the show Cara al Show.
Puente did not beat around the bush when discussing the President of the Generalitat. According to the minister, Illa would be a man who “would not go amiss for a country as tense as ours.”
“I like Salvador Illa a lot”
When Giró asked him about the possibility of having a Catalan president at the head of the Government, Puente replied with laughter that it would be “the square of the circle.” For readers in the province, the mention has a clear nuance: a Catalan socialist leader appears as a candidate to lead the party at the national level.
The minister did not limit himself to Illa. He also mentioned Carlos Cuerpo, Minister of Economy, as well as Nadia Calviño, Teresa Ribera, and Pilar Alegría. Regarding the group, he ironically commented that the PSOE has a good roster and reminded that the party has accumulated 150 years of history.
Puente, however, urged not to jump to conclusions. He recalled that Sánchez has four years left in his term and concluded that it is not wise to rush, because “who knows where we will be.” For now, the succession in the PSOE remains a topic for after-dinner conversation.
