Darpa opens an extraordinary line of €800,000 for rabbit farms, with an amount of up to €8 per animal. The application period ends on October 26, 2026.
According to eurocarne.com, the Department of Agriculture, Livestock, Fishing and Food (Darpa) of the Government of Catalonia has launched an extraordinary aid line endowed with €800,000 for the rabbit farming sector. The total call amounts to €2.3 million, with an additional €1.5 million reserved for the beekeeping sector.
The aim is to compensate for part of the productivity losses accumulated in recent months, provide liquidity to farms, and ensure the continuity of an agricultural activity that is significant in rural areas. The department estimates the amount at up to €8 per animal, a figure that could be adjusted according to the number of applications and the budget available.
Eligible applicants are holders of rabbit farms in Catalonia that are registered and active in the Register of Livestock Farms, with a minimum of 15 breeding females. For the calculation, does, breeding males, and replacement animals will be counted, taking as a reference the last census declared between January 1, 2026 and the day before the publication of the call.
Only animals that do not exceed the authorized capacity in the Generalitat's livestock management system (GTR) will be counted.
The sector is going through a difficult phase. Today there are 326 rabbit farms in Catalonia, a 65.9% decrease since 2014, and the rabbit population has fallen by 318,112 animals, a 35.3% drop. Profitability is also lacking: according to the Agricultural Accounting Network of Catalonia (XCAC), farms recorded negative margins between 2018 and 2024, with average losses of €0.55 per rabbit, including the cost of family labour.
For farmers in the regions with rabbit farms, the aid comes as a cash relief. Applications will be submitted electronically, through the usual channels of the Generalitat, from October 10 to 26, 2026, both dates included.
