UAB asks the Mossos to prevent Vito Quiles from stepping foot on the Bellaterra campus next Monday. The university will not grant permission and wants to avoid disturbances like those from last year.
The agitator Vito Quiles intends to appear on next Monday at the Bellaterra campus, as announced on his social media. The visit is part of a tour the activist is making across Spain.
Despite this intention, the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona states that it has not received any formal request and therefore will not grant permission for any event. The decision is also aimed at avoiding incidents like those that occurred this Thursday in Pamplona during another event by the same agitator, or those that took place a year ago on the same campus.
The event that Quiles held last year at UAB, also without authorization, resulted in disturbances. The university then requested the police to prevent his presence, and riot police had to contain antifascist groups opposing his arrival.
Ultimately, that event did not take place due to the disturbances and because the university informed Quiles that he did not have permission. Now, the Mossos d'Esquadra confirm that they have received the UAB's request and are considering how to proceed.
Meanwhile, groups such as the Antifascist Platform of UAB, the Socialist Youth Organization (OJS), and the Students' Union of the Catalan Countries (SEPC) have circulated calls to physically oppose Quiles' presence on campus.
For the university community of Bellaterra, Monday's events may result in changes to access or increased police presence. For now, neither the university nor the Mossos have detailed the measures they will take.
