A significant forest fire in Aiguamúrcia has led to the confinement of several communities as firefighters battle the blaze affecting over 80 hectares. The situation remains critical with ongoing evacuations and firefighting efforts.
A devastating forest fire erupted Sunday afternoon in Aiguamúrcia, Tarragona, forcing authorities to issue emergency confinement orders for multiple nearby communities. The flames have already consumed over 80 hectares of forested land, threatening residential areas and prompting a swift response from local firefighting units.
The alarm was raised at 3:57 PM, leading to the mobilization of more than 70 firefighting units, including nine aerial teams, totaling around 200 personnel. As the fire advanced at a rate of approximately 2 kilometers per hour, officials acted quickly to confine residents in affected areas such as Ranxos de Bonany, Bon Any, Valldossera, Can Llenes, Mas Gassons, El Mas Vermell, and Pontons.
The situation escalated rapidly as the flames jumped initial containment lines set along the T-224 highway. Firefighters are currently focusing their efforts on preventing further spread towards urbanized zones while also managing secondary hotspots that have emerged up to 200 meters away from the main blaze.
The Catalan Meteorological Service reported challenging conditions for firefighting efforts with temperatures soaring around 32ºC, relative humidity at just 30%, and wind gusts reaching up to 28 kilometers per hour. These factors contribute significantly to the fire’s intensity and rapid progression.
The Generalitat’s Civil Protection agency issued an ES-Alert at approximately 5:10 PM, urging residents across several municipalities—including Aiguamúrcia, La Laguna, Pontons, Querol, and Torrelles de Foix—to stay indoors with windows closed. This precautionary measure affects an estimated population of around 2,500 people.
This incident marks a continuation of recent wildfire challenges in the region; just days prior, another fire had ignited in Pla de Manlleu but was brought under control.
