The Generalitat has issued a heat alert as Catalonia faces its third heatwave of the summer, expected to last until Wednesday. With extreme temperatures and Saharan dust, the risk of wildfires is heightened.

Catalonia is set to endure its third significant heatwave of the summer, with temperatures soaring and an accompanying risk of wildfires. The alert was issued by Protecció Civil de la Generalitat on Sunday, following forecasts from the Servei Meteorològic de Catalunya (Meteocat) predicting that this intense weather pattern will persist at least until Wednesday.

The most severe impacts are anticipated in the northwest regions, particularly in Alta Ribagorça, Pallars Sobirà, and Vall d’Aran. As temperatures peak on Wednesday, residents can expect not only sweltering daytime conditions but also uncomfortable nighttime warmth along the coastal areas.

On Monday and Tuesday, the focus will shift to Ponent in Lleida where heat advisories are expected to be most pronounced. Additionally, warnings for elevated nighttime temperatures have been issued for several areas including Ribera d’Ebre and Baix Ebre in Tarragona.

This heatwave will also bring with it a phenomenon known as Saharan dust suspension across much of Catalonia. Authorities are urging local municipalities to prepare air-conditioned spaces for residents who may need relief from the oppressive heat.

In light of these conditions, fire safety has become a top priority. With 72 municipalities classified under extreme fire risk and 187 others facing high danger levels due to dry conditions and high winds, Bombers de la Generalitat have ramped up their operational readiness. This includes deploying additional Basic Intervention Units (UBI) tailored to each region’s specific risk profile.

The firefighting teams are also enhancing their capabilities by opening volunteer fire stations and bolstering control rooms with extra personnel. The Group of Forest Actions (Graf) is on standby alongside aerial support units ready to respond swiftly should fires break out.

“Given the current conditions, we could see rapid fire spread leading to secondary ignition points,” warned a spokesperson from Bombers de la Generalitat.

Currently, firefighting efforts are concentrated on stabilizing ongoing incidents in Guimerà while monitoring other controlled blazes across various locations including Camarasa and Sentmenat in Barcelona province.

This situation echoes previous summers when Catalonia faced similar challenges; however, experts note that this year’s combination of extreme temperatures and Saharan dust presents unique difficulties for both residents and emergency services alike.

As citizens brace for this intense weather event, they are advised to stay hydrated and seek cooler environments whenever possible. For those looking for respite from the heat or concerned about potential wildfires in their area, local authorities recommend checking community resources or visiting designated cooling centers throughout Catalonia.
