A new multi-operator vehicle has been introduced in Catalonia to ensure basic communication during emergencies like wildfires. This initiative aims to keep citizens informed and safe.

A groundbreaking initiative was unveiled by the Generalitat de Catalunya on Wednesday, introducing a multi-operator mobile unit designed to restore essential communication services during emergencies. This vehicle will play a crucial role in maintaining contact between authorities and the public in crisis situations, particularly during forest fires and extreme weather events.

The mobile unit is equipped to temporarily restore telephone coverage in areas severely impacted by disasters that disrupt telecommunications. The project was commissioned by the Catalan government to Telefónica, which developed the necessary technology for this innovative solution.

Albert Tort, the Secretary of Telecommunications and Digital Transformation, emphasized that this system was initiated following the significant telecommunications blackout experienced in April 2025. The mobile unit is capable of providing simultaneous voice and data services through major telecom operators in Catalonia, including Telefónica, Vodafone, and MasOrange. With an initial investment of €422,500, it aims to enhance resilience against future crises.

The vehicle features a deployable antenna that connects via radio link and satellite, extending its coverage radius between 10 and 20 kilometers. It operates independently for approximately 48 hours, ensuring continuous service even when traditional networks fail.

This collaborative effort highlights the importance of partnerships among public administrations and telecom companies. Tort stated, “In emergency situations, we must unite our efforts to strengthen resilience, knowing that digital infrastructures can be compromised.”

The introduction of this mobile unit comes at a critical time as summer approaches—a season notorious for wildfires across Europe. Historical data shows that regions with proactive emergency communication systems have significantly improved their response times during crises.

The new system will enable citizens to receive vital alerts regarding emergencies directly from authorities. These notifications will include essential safety instructions through platforms like ES-Alert, ensuring that residents are well-informed about potential dangers.

This initiative not only addresses immediate communication needs but also sets a precedent for future technological advancements in disaster management across Spain. As communities prepare for another challenging summer season marked by climate-related incidents, having reliable communication tools becomes indispensable.

For those interested in learning more about how this system works or how it may affect local emergency protocols, further information can be obtained from the Generalitat’s official website or through local municipal offices.
