Six men were arrested in Barcelona during two police operations targeting summer burglaries. The suspects, aged 29 to 42, had no prior criminal records for similar offenses.
In a significant crackdown on residential burglaries, the Mossos d’Esquadra apprehended six individuals in Barcelona linked to a series of thefts occurring during the summer months. The arrests took place across two separate operations in the districts of Sarrià-Sant Gervasi and Horta-Guinardó, areas known for their affluent neighborhoods and seasonal influx of tourists.
The first operation unfolded on the afternoon of July 30 when officers responded to reports of a burglary in progress at a private residence in Sarrià-Sant Gervasi. Upon arrival, they spotted four men hastily leaving the vicinity with bags filled with stolen goods. As police identified themselves, the suspects attempted to flee in different directions, prompting an extensive search involving both uniformed and plainclothes officers. Ultimately, all four were apprehended and several items believed to be stolen were recovered from them.
According to police reports, the targeted home showed signs of forced entry and tampering with its alarm system. This incident highlights a concerning trend as many residents travel during summer vacations, leaving their homes vulnerable.
The following day, another operation was conducted in Horta-Guinardó after undercover officers noticed two men acting suspiciously outside various residences. They observed these individuals checking doorbells and monitoring entrances to ascertain whether homes were occupied. After closely following them through several buildings, police intervened as they attempted to manipulate access systems using tools.
During this second operation, authorities discovered items typically associated with burglary attempts: protective gloves, masks, hats, sunglasses, and large screwdrivers. Additionally, cash was seized from one suspect who was found to have an outstanding arrest warrant.
Interestingly, most of those arrested did not have prior criminal records related to property crimes. Investigators from Mossos d’Esquadra are considering that these individuals may belong to itinerant groups that exploit the summer season’s increased travel activity in Barcelona.
This recent wave of arrests is reminiscent of similar operations conducted last summer when local law enforcement reported a rise in residential break-ins coinciding with vacation periods. In response to these trends, authorities have intensified surveillance efforts across high-risk neighborhoods.
