A family of three, including a toddler, was safely rescued by the Guardia Civil after their boat drifted off the coast of l'Ametlla de Mar. The incident highlights ongoing maritime safety concerns in the region.

In a dramatic rescue operation on Monday, the Guardia Civil successfully saved two adults and a one-and-a-half-year-old baby from a drifting boat near Sant Jordi d’Alfama, close to l’Ametlla de Mar. The family found themselves in a precarious situation as their vessel became stranded about half a mile from shore, facing hazardous waves that posed a risk of collision with nearby rocks.

The alarm was raised around noon when Salvamento Marítimo alerted local authorities about the distressed boat. Responding swiftly, the S-30 patrol vessel of the Guardia Civil from Tarragona was dispatched to investigate. Upon arrival at the scene, officers discovered the recreational craft adrift and confirmed that it had suffered an engine failure.

Fortunately, all three occupants were unharmed. After assessing their health and ensuring they were safe, officers facilitated their transfer onto the Guardia Civil’s vessel. Subsequently, they initiated procedures to tow the disabled boat back to port.

This incident underscores ongoing concerns regarding maritime safety in coastal areas like l’Ametlla de Mar. With increasing numbers of recreational boats navigating these waters during peak seasons, incidents like this serve as reminders for boaters to ensure their vessels are well-maintained and equipped for emergencies.

The successful rescue operation reflects not only effective coordination among emergency services but also highlights how quickly situations can escalate at sea. Historical data shows that similar rescues have been on the rise over recent years due to both increased boating activity and unpredictable weather conditions along Spain’s Mediterranean coast.

As summer approaches and more families take to the water for leisure activities, authorities urge all mariners to remain vigilant and prepared for unexpected challenges while out at sea. For those planning trips in this area, it is advisable to check weather forecasts regularly and ensure that all safety equipment is onboard before departure.

The rescued family was taken back safely to shore where they could reunite with loved ones after what must have been a harrowing experience at sea.
