A fatal fire shakes Cabrera de Mar
This morning, the quiet municipality of Cabrera de Mar, located in the Maresme region, was engulfed in tragedy when a devastating fire claimed the life of a man. The incident occurred around 7:54 AM in a warehouse situated on Avinguda del Maresme, where the Firefighters of the Generalitat found the lifeless and charred body of the victim upon entering the premises.
Four units from the Mataró Fire Station were mobilised to control the flames that quickly spread through the warehouse. Among the teams dispatched were a light command unit, a heavy urban pump, a light pump, and an automatic ladder. Additionally, the Medical Emergency System (SEM) activated two ambulances to handle any eventuality.
The warehouse where the tragic event occurred was filled with scrap metal, an activity to which the deceased was allegedly dedicated. Although municipal sources indicate that he had rented the premises, he did not reside there permanently; however, a mattress found inside suggests that he spent time there. This location has been identified as a conflict point by local security forces.
Pending urban transformation, this area is scheduled to become a green space under the development of the Pla de l’Avellà. Recently, authorities conducted operations against drug trafficking in the vicinity, adding another layer to the social and economic complexity of the area.
The institutional response was swift following this unfortunate incident. The Town Hall expressed its outrage over the lack of timely communication during the operation. According to reports from the Council, they were not notified until 8:51 AM via a text message about what had occurred, which hindered the proper activation of the Pla Drupocim for emergencies.
Òscar Fernandez, the mayor of the municipality, issued a statement deeply lamenting what happened and extending his condolences to the friends and family of the deceased. The municipal administration has decided to file an official complaint regarding this lack of coordination during critical situations.
This tragic event once again raises questions related to safety in vulnerable areas and highlights the urgent need to improve emergency protocols. The community is seeking clear answers on how to prevent similar incidents in the future and ensure greater safety for all its residents.
