A 95-year-old man died on Tuesday, October 13, in a fire at his home in the Sants-Badal neighbourhood, in the Sants-Montjuïc district of Barcelona. The fire broke out a few minutes after 18:00 in a flat located at number 2-4 on Portbou Street, at the intersection with Sants Street, opposite the Badal metro station (L5).
The flames spread violently throughout the flat and even reached out onto the balcony towards the street. Smoke covered the area, and the smell of burning spread to nearby neighbourhoods such as Les Corts. The firefighting teams managed to extinguish the fire in approximately half an hour, but upon entering the property, they found the man's lifeless body. Medical personnel could do nothing to save his life.
Eight units from the Bombers de Barcelona, members of the Guardia Urbana, and the Mossos d'Esquadra, as well as several ambulances from the Sistema d'Emergències Mèdiques (SEM), were dispatched to the scene. The Mossos have opened an investigation to clarify the causes of the fire, which are currently unknown.
The Barcelona City Council has activated the Barcelona Social Emergency and Urgency Centre (CUESB) to assist the victim's family. The operation temporarily blocked Sants Street during a busy time for traffic and pedestrians due to the end of the workday, causing a stir in the area.
