The transformation of the historic CACI factory in Badalona into a vibrant music education center is set to reshape the city’s cultural landscape. Announced by Mayor Xavier Garcia Albiol, this ambitious project aims to establish the future Ciutat de la Música, which will house the Conservatori and Escola de Música Moderna de Badalona. This initiative not only revitalizes a long-abandoned site but also enhances Badalona’s reputation as a key player in music education.

Plans for a new cultural landmark

The CACI factory, which has stood unused for over 15 years, is finally receiving attention as part of a broader vision to integrate arts and education within the community. The Àrea Metropolitana de Barcelona (AMB) has recently launched an architectural competition aimed at rehabilitating the building, with a budget of €12.7 million. This funding reflects the city’s commitment to restoring one of its most significant maritime structures while creating an educational facility that meets contemporary needs.

The proposed Ciutat de la Música will span over 6,000 square meters, consolidating various musical activities currently scattered across different locations in Badalona. It will feature classrooms for musical training, study booths, spaces for chamber music and ensembles, a recording studio, and administrative offices. Additionally, it will include an auditorium capable of seating between 250 and 300 spectators, along with a chamber hall designed for 150 to 200 attendees.

“This project is spectacular and addresses two important situations,” said Albiol.

The mayor emphasized that this initiative not only breathes new life into an iconic structure but also positions Badalona as a leader in music education. The collaboration between AMB and the Conservatori has been crucial in shaping this project to ensure it aligns with educational goals.

The architectural competition presents several challenges, particularly in balancing the preservation of the CACI’s historical values with modern functional requirements. Proposals must demonstrate how they will integrate new volumes to enhance accessibility while respecting the original structure’s integrity.

Moreover, enhancing public access is paramount; designs should improve connections between the building and surrounding areas such as the waterfront promenade and local plazas. This approach aims to position the Ciutat de la Música as a cultural gateway for visitors exploring Badalona’s coastal sector.

“The goal is to create an equipment that serves culture, education, and citizenship,” stated AMB representatives.

Sustainability remains at the forefront of this redevelopment effort. Plans include reusing existing materials where possible, minimizing carbon footprints through energy-efficient solutions, capturing rainwater for use within facilities, and ensuring comfortable climate conditions both inside and outside the building.

<palthough initially slated for completion in 2026 as per earlier announcements by Mayor Albiol, delays have pushed back timelines due to extensive planning requirements associated with such a large-scale project. The competition will unfold in two phases: first inviting conceptual proposals followed by detailed submissions from shortlisted finalists before selecting a winning design.

<pas Badalona prepares for this transformative journey towards establishing its Ciutat de la Música, community members are hopeful that this endeavor will not only preserve their heritage but also foster future generations' love for music.
