A team of surveyors has certified the South Needle of Malavesina as the new peak at 3,012.9 meters in Catalonia. This finding increases the number of summits over 3,000 meters in the region to thirteen.
The Pyrenees mountain range has seen its list of peaks above 3,000 meters grow with the recent certification of the South Needle of Malavesina, which reaches an exact height of 3,012.9 meters. This discovery was made by the survey team from Sostremetries on July 5, and represents a significant milestone for Catalonia's mountainous geography, which now boasts thirteen summits exceeding this mark.
The precise measurement of the new three-thousander was carried out in the Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park, where it was determined that the peak's prominence is eleven meters relative to the nearest col. This characteristic is essential for classifying a peak as a three-thousander, following criteria established by mountaineering experts for decades.
Marc Calaff, a member of the technical team, explained how the measurement was conducted: "We used advanced Lidar technology and GNSS receivers to obtain accurate data on coordinates and altitudes." Collaboration with Isaac Hoyas, a satellite navigation expert, was crucial to ensure the accuracy of the process.
The group known as Los Cazafantasmas will also play an important role in updating their mountain inventory following this finding. Carles Giné, one of its members, confirmed that they will officially add the South Needle to their list; however, they have yet to decide whether to classify it as a primary or secondary peak.
Over time, Catalonia has seen significant changes in its mountainous topography. Compared to previous years when there were only twelve peaks recognized above 3,000 meters, this new discovery reflects advancements in surveying techniques and a growing interest in exploring and cataloguing the Pyrenean mountains.
Sostremetries had previously impacted the Aragonese mountain map by adding two new peaks to its list and declassifying two others that did not meet the established minimum requirements. Such research not only enriches geographical knowledge but also promotes tourism and outdoor activities in these protected natural areas.
For those interested in visiting this new three-thousander or exploring other nearby peaks, it is recommended to access the national park via well-marked routes from La Vall de Boí. The peak climbing season typically runs from June to September when weather conditions are more favourable.
