The City Council of Barcelona has officially opened applications for the second edition of the Coedition Awards, aimed at supporting unpublished works that reflect the essence of the city and its inhabitants. With a budget of €160,000, this initiative seeks to enhance knowledge about Barcelona through informative publications while fostering collaboration within the editorial sector.

Details on application process and criteria

Applications for the awards commenced on June 19, 2026, and will close on July 10, 2026. The awards are designed to recognize outstanding proposals submitted by publishers for co-publishing books that focus on Barcelona’s culture and community. This year, special consideration will be given to projects related to the 2026 Biennial of Thought, which will explore urban futures as Barcelona serves as the capital of architecture.

The aim is not only to promote knowledge but also to ensure proper dissemination and promotion of these works. Proposals must align with collections approved by the Council of Editions and Publications, as outlined in specific guidelines provided for this call.

“The award will consist of co-publishing the proposed work through an agreement between the awarded entity and the City Council,”

stated a council representative. This agreement will regulate co-publishing conditions and include municipal financial support covering up to 50% of each project’s budget.

The call is open to legal entities engaged in book publishing and distribution that meet established requirements. Eligible applicants include private publishers, university presses, and organizations whose statutory objectives involve book publication.

No restrictions are placed on the registered office location for participating entities. Each applicant may submit up to three projects but can win a maximum of two awards. The jury will determine how many prizes are awarded per category based on established evaluation criteria.

“This initiative aims to strengthen ties with the publishing industry while providing essential support for its activities,”

a spokesperson added during a press briefing. The jury will consist of members from Barcelona’s Council of Editions and Publications who will evaluate submissions based on their relevance and quality.

This year’s emphasis on proposals linked to the Biennial reflects a broader commitment by Barcelona’s administration to engage with contemporary issues surrounding urban development and sustainability. The Biennial aims not only to showcase innovative ideas but also encourages critical discussions about future city living.

The selected publications may include essays or compilations featuring contributions from participants at this year’s Biennial, including speakers who share insights from conferences or panel discussions held during this significant event.

The Coedition Awards represent an important step in enriching Barcelona’s cultural landscape by promoting literature that resonates with its citizens’ experiences. By investing in local authorship and editorial initiatives, Barcelona aims not just at preserving its heritage but also at shaping its future narrative through literature.
