A Flame that Unites Territories
On April 21, Lleida will be the epicentre of an unprecedented cultural and sporting celebration. More than twenty entities from the local area have joined the Correllengua Agermanat 2026, an event aimed at strengthening ties between Catalan-speaking communities. The torch, symbol of the event, will arrive in the city from Agramunt and Linyola, marking the start of a series of activities that will highlight the importance of Catalan as a common language.
Starting at 6 PM, the Sant Joan square will host the central act of the Correllengua. This will include cultural activities, speeches, and a traditional singing of garrotines. The arrival of the torch will be a culminating moment, followed by the reading of the manifesto advocating for the defence of Catalan in critical times.
The route of the Correllengua is not just symbolic; it will cover more than 1,500 kilometres in 17 stages from its start in Prada to its end in Elche. As it passes through Lleida, participants will take an urban route that includes iconic points such as the Príncipe de Viana bridge and the Ferran promenade.
Oriol Rebull, one of the event organisers, has emphasised the current relevance of the Correllengua: “It is crucial to give visibility to Catalan,” he stated, echoing recent judicial decisions regarding its use in schools. He also highlighted that this initiative is not only cultural but also festive and sporting.
As it moves towards Tarragona after passing through Lleida, the Correllengua Agermanat promises to be a beacon for all those who value and defend the Catalan language. With activities scheduled until May 5, this event presents a unique opportunity to celebrate not only a language but also a shared identity among diverse communities.
