A new leadership in the Architects' Association of Catalonia
Sandra Bestraten i Castells has been elected as the new dean of the Architects' Association of Catalonia (COAC), marking a milestone in electoral participation with 33% of registered architects voting. This percentage represents a notable increase compared to previous elections, where only 19.27% were involved in the process.
Bestraten received 42.64% of the votes, equivalent to 1,445 votes. Her main competitor, the current dean Guim Costa Calsamiglia, received 1,165 votes, while Jacinet Raurell i Bernadà came in third with 606 votes. In her statement following the results, Bestraten emphasized her commitment to transforming professional practice towards more agile and efficient processes.
Bestraten has expressed her intention to use talent and innovation as essential tools to address critical issues such as the housing emergency, population aging, and the effects of climate change. This approach reflects a modern and adaptive vision in response to the current challenges facing architecture and urban planning in Catalonia.
Aside from her new responsibility as dean, Sandra Bestraten is recognized for her academic work at ETSAB-UPC and UIC, as well as for her significant projects such as the rehabilitation of Ca la Dona in Barcelona and the construction of the Waldorf-Steiner School El Til·ler in Bellaterra. Her career combines a solid professional practice with supportive educational initiatives.
Not only has Bestraten emerged as a key figure; important elections have also taken place in other areas. In Barcelona, Cristina Mora i Porcel was elected president with 995 votes (37.2%). In Vallès, Fermín Aparicio Alcantud retained his position with 211 votes. These elections reflect a renewed interest among professionals in the sector to actively participate in their organizations.
