Vilassar de Mar has commemorated the 45th anniversary of Vilassar Ràdio, one of the oldest stations in Catalunya, with the presentation of the book We Are Making Radio!, written by local journalist Josep Bernabeu. This event took place in the Roser Carrau hall and brought together more than 200 people, including former collaborators who have been a fundamental part of the station's journey.
A tribute to collective history
The book tells a story that began in June 1980, when a group of friends decided to take advantage of the new democratic winds to fill the information void in their community. Since then, nearly 500 collaborators have passed through its microphones, making Vilassar Ràdio the main local medium for over four decades.
With the premise of paying tribute to all those who have contributed to the development and growth of the medium, Bernabeu highlights that “the book is a chronicle of a collective history.” The work is divided into two sections: one dedicated to the beginnings between 1980 and 1985, and another covering from 1985 to 2025. Its pages mention the names and significant contributions of those who made this station possible.
Throughout the text, the most emblematic programmes broadcast by Vilassar Ràdio are reviewed, accompanied by graphic material that illustrates its evolution. The research for this project was not easy; Bernabeu had to dedicate many hours to exploring municipal archives and personal documents provided by former collaborators. “I have received a lot of original documentation and valuable memories that enrich this story,” commented the author.
Aside from the historical journey, the book also addresses key aspects such as the municipalisation of the service, the transition to professional management, and its role as an essential public service. It analyses how the organisational and technical structure has changed over time, as well as the challenges faced during critical moments such as the pandemic.
One of the highlighted milestones is the production of the special programme Informative Coronavirus during the lockdown, where the entire team worked from home. Additionally, Vilassar Ràdio was a pioneer in Spain by launching its first municipal podcast in 2005, marking an important precedent in the national radio landscape.
As Vilassar Ràdio continues its journey towards new technological and communicative stages, this book not only celebrates its rich history but also invites reflection on the lasting impact it has had on the community. The presentation was an emotional reminder of the value of local journalism and how this medium has managed to adapt to social and technological changes without losing its essence.
