A delegation from Barcelona, led by city officials, is in Shanghai to enhance economic collaboration. The mission includes 16 Catalan companies exploring new opportunities.
A significant delegation from Barcelona has embarked on a mission to Shanghai, aiming to bolster economic ties and explore new collaborative opportunities. From June 21 to June 24, the city’s Deputy Mayors Raquel Gil and Jordi Valls are leading this initiative under the Barcelona Business Bridge program, which seeks to enhance institutional and business relationships between Barcelona and major global cities.
Delegation includes diverse Catalan companies
The mission features a group of 16 Catalan companies spanning various sectors such as artificial intelligence, automotive, construction, finance, and biomedicine. These firms are participating in networking events designed to forge connections with Chinese businesses and identify strategic investment opportunities. Notable participants include Roka Furadada, Ficosa, Almirall, and Banc Sabadell.
Key meetings scheduled with Chinese counterparts
The agenda is packed with crucial meetings aimed at fostering partnerships. On June 22, Gil will present Barcelona’s key assets at a major economic promotion event organized by the China Construction Bank. This gathering aims to attract high-value investments into the city.
“We are here not just to promote our city but also to learn from Shanghai’s innovative approaches,” said Raquel Gil during her opening remarks.
Cultural exchanges complement business discussions
In addition to business meetings, cultural exchanges play a vital role in this mission. Jordi Valls began his journey by exploring Wenzhou’s rich cultural heritage—home to many of the Chinese community members residing in Barcelona. His itinerary includes visits to significant local sites like the Shuomen Ancient Port Ruins.
A historic partnership celebrates its anniversary
This visit coincides with the 25th anniversary of the sister-city relationship between Barcelona and Shanghai established in 2001. Over these years, both cities have developed a robust economic partnership that has seen hundreds of companies operating across their borders. The growth of direct flight connections has also facilitated this relationship; there are now between two and three daily flights connecting these two vibrant cities.
Sustainable trade initiatives take center stage
A highlight of this mission is promoting sustainable trade practices between both ports—Barcelona and Shanghai—aimed at reducing carbon footprints associated with maritime exchanges. Recent agreements have been signed focusing on creating a green corridor for goods transport.
“This initiative reflects our commitment not only to economic growth but also environmental sustainability,” added Valls during his discussions about future collaborations.
The future looks bright for bilateral relations
The ongoing efforts through programs like Barcelona Business Bridge, which offers tailored business agendas for participating companies, indicate a promising future for bilateral relations. Following its successful launch in Mexico City last year, this second edition aims at deepening existing ties while paving the way for new ventures.
This mission encapsulates more than just business; it represents an evolving friendship built over decades that continues to thrive amid changing global dynamics. As both cities look towards future collaborations, one can only hope that these efforts yield fruitful results for all involved parties.
