A promising summer for agriculture in Lleida
The fruit harvesting campaign in Lleida is shaping up to be one of the most important in recent years, with the expectation that around 20,000 seasonal workers will be hired to work in the agricultural sector this summer. This figure represents a significant increase compared to the previous year, when adverse weather conditions reduced the harvest and the number of workers.
Pere Roqué, president of Asaja Catalunya, has shared his optimism following the first follow-up meeting of the campaign, where projections for this season were discussed. According to Roqué, the total volume of contracts could reach up to 25,000, as many workers will start now and continue until October, when harvesting in northern Lleida concludes.
Expectations are equally encouraging in terms of production, which could reach 403,970 tonnes, representing a 14% increase compared to 2025. The Minister of Agriculture, Òscar Ordeig, also highlighted that despite some adverse weather episodes, the overall outlook is positive.
To address the housing needs of seasonal workers, the Government has implemented an expanded strategy aimed at providing a more coordinated and dignified model. This year, 11 facilities have been set up across several counties near Lleida, adding up to a total of 712 available places.
A significant new development is the opening of the new Seasonal Workers Attention Centre by the Lleida City Council, located in La Caparrella and with a capacity for 32 people. Additionally, the private hostel in Seròs will extend its operation for four months this year (from May to September), offering 40 continuous places.
They will not be limited to these spaces; nearly a hundred more will also be set up in pavilion 3 during the Lleida Fair, and other urgent accommodations will be available thanks to the Municipal Urban Agenda Company (EMAU) and the Jericó hostel for vulnerable individuals.
As the agricultural season progresses, both local authorities and farmers are working hard to ensure that this campaign is not only productive but also humane and dignified for all involved.
