A New Horizon on the Beaches of Mataró
Mataró, one of the jewels of Maresme, is taking a bold step towards creating a healthier coastal environment. Mayor David Bote and the Councillor for City Promotion, Heidi Pérez, have announced an ambitious plan aimed at eradicating tobacco consumption on its beaches by 2027. This initiative is part of the campaign “Live the Beaches with Health. Live the Smoke-Free Beaches,” driven by the Diputació de Barcelona.
The first phase of the project will begin this summer with an intensive information campaign aimed at raising awareness among bathers about the benefits of enjoying the coast smoke-free. Community agents will be deployed along the seafront to interact directly with visitors, promoting a tobacco-free environment through talks and the distribution of informational materials.
“We want our beaches to be spaces where everyone can enjoy without worrying about tobacco smoke,” stated Bote during the plan's presentation. The strategy includes not only digital campaigns but also visible posters along the coast.
By the end of this year, the City Council is expected to modify the Civility and Coexistence Ordinance to formalise the total ban on tobacco on the beaches. This decree will take effect at the start of the summer season in 2027. Furthermore, Mataró is not only focused on eliminating smoke; it is also implementing significant improvements in accessibility.
The Red Cross will expand its adapted bathing service, offering daily assistance from July to September, allowing more people to enjoy the sea without barriers. Extended walkways to the water and amphibious chairs are some innovations that will facilitate this experience.
Environmental commitment is also a priority for Mataró. This summer, daily cleaning efforts on the beaches will be intensified, and a new area for selective waste collection will be established near Callao. Additionally, animal lovers will continue to enjoy the dog beach located in Ponent.
As for recreational activities, the Mataró Swimming Centre will offer local rentals of light boats from Varador, providing new opportunities to explore the coast from a different perspective.
Safety is another fundamental aspect; Civil Protection will coordinate a robust daily service that will include surveillance and lifeguarding at various local beaches. A specialised team will be available from early morning until late evening each day, ensuring peace of mind for all visitors.
Mataró is ready to welcome its citizens and tourists with open arms, offering not only a safe space but also a healthy and inclusive environment to fully enjoy the summer.
