A day to remember in Castelldefels

This Sunday, Pineda beach in Castelldefels became the setting for an emotional event that marked a milestone in marine conservation. The Foundation for the Conservation and Recovery of Marine Animals (CRAM) carried out the release of five loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta) previously rescued along the Catalan coast. This event, known as ‘Torna a casa’, was held for the first time at this beach, attracting thousands of attendees who came together to celebrate the return of these animals to the sea.

The initiative was made possible thanks to the collaboration between CRAM, the Castelldefels City Council, the Generalitat, and the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona (AMB). This change of location not only aims to give greater visibility to conservation actions but also to encourage greater citizen participation. According to sources from CRAM, this event will be itinerant and will take place in different municipalities in the metropolitan area with the support of AMB.

Before releasing the turtles, attendees were able to enjoy various educational activities designed to raise awareness about the threats facing the marine environment. An information tent provided details on how turtles nest and the dangers they face in their natural habitat. Additionally, a theatrical performance illustrated the rescue process carried out by the centre's specialists.

During the event, the importance of not touching the turtles or other injured marine animals was emphasized. Organizers urged the public to call 112 if they found any injured specimens to ensure their proper recovery. It was also reminded that during the nesting season, it is vital not to interfere with the eggs laid in the sand.

‘Torna a casa’ has been described as a fundamental symbol of the work carried out by the CRAM Foundation for over three decades. The director of the organization, Elsa Jiménez, highlighted that sharing such events with the entire community is essential to strengthen the collective commitment to marine environmental protection.

The event was attended by prominent figures including Mayor Manu Reyes and other government representatives such as Anna Estella and Jordi Bordanove. All expressed their unwavering support for initiatives that promote both environmental education and animal welfare.
