Mataró Modernises Waste Management
The city of Mataró has decided to make a significant leap towards modernisation and sustainability in its waste management system. In an effort to improve the efficiency and durability of its infrastructure, the City Council has announced the renewal of nearly 1,900 open containers distributed across 350 areas throughout the municipality.
The new containers, which will replace the existing ones, are designed with a focus on vandal resistance and increased capacity. With a capacity increase of between 10% and 15%, these metal containers will allow for the storage of up to 3,750 litres for residual waste, packaging, and paper/cardboard, while those designated for glass and organic waste will have a capacity of 2,250 litres.
The renewal not only implies an aesthetic change; it also represents a considerable investment by the City Council, which will allocate 1.5 million euros to acquire these new units. This investment will be financed through surpluses from the municipal budgets for the years 2024 and 2025. Additionally, the acquisition of another 250 containers is planned in the coming months to complete the renewal in another 50 areas.
This project is part of the agreement reached between the local government (PSC and En Comú Podem Mataró) and Junts per Mataró, which aims to establish budgetary stability while advancing towards more sustainable practices. The initiative also includes the gradual renewal of the remaining containers within the next municipal service contract related to street cleaning, beaches, and selective collection.
As cities face increasing challenges related to proper waste management, Mataró positions itself as a model to follow by implementing innovative solutions that not only enhance urban aesthetics but also promote greater environmental responsibility among its citizens.
