An ecological strategy in Mataró
Mataró, located in the Maresme region, has taken a significant step in the fight against forest fires by awarding a contract that establishes the use of silvopasture as a prevention method. This technique, which combines controlled grazing with vegetation management, aims to reduce the risk of fire spread in urban areas close to wooded zones.
The agreement, signed with the company Badacabres, SL, has an initial duration of two years and an annual cost of 17,739.19 euros plus VAT. The intervention will take place over approximately 48.8 hectares covering several urbanisations such as La Cornisa and Can Quirze. This project is based on a successful pilot test carried out last spring.
A flock of about 250 goats, guided by an experienced shepherd, will be responsible for this crucial task. The main objective is to prepare the forest strips before summer, a critical period when the risk of fires increases significantly. In addition to grazing, mechanical brush cutters will be used to ensure that the areas are adequately clean and safe.
The initiative also responds to existing regulations that require residents located within 500 meters of forested areas to maintain protective strips free of dry vegetation. These strips must be at least 25 meters wide to ensure greater safety against potential fires.
Mataró not only seeks to protect its immediate environment but also to establish a sustainable model that can be replicated in other areas vulnerable to forest fires. With this pioneering action, the city positions itself as a reference in the implementation of agricultural and livestock practices that contribute to environmental conservation and public safety.
