A letter seeking citizen well-being
The mayor of Sant Cugat del Vallès, Josep Maria Vallès, has taken the initiative to send a letter to the Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Fishing and Food of the Generalitat, Òscar Ordeig, requesting an urgent review of the restrictions limiting access to Collserola. In his letter, Vallès argues that these limitations are negatively affecting the emotional and physical health of the municipality's residents.
The Town Hall's concern focuses on how the prolonged closure of access to this natural space has restricted essential daily activities for over 5,000 people who use these trails daily for walking, running, or cycling. “The connection with our natural environment is vital for the well-being of our citizens,” Vallès states.
While acknowledging the need for restrictive measures for health reasons, the mayor calls for a balance between these restrictions and actions that promote public health. “It is essential to find a middle ground between necessary measures and the right to physical and emotional well-being,” he asserts.
Vallès also points out a comparative grievance by observing that some restrictions are being lifted for economic activities, such as filming on land affected by the same limitations. “If this is allowed for economic reasons, why not extend this flexibility to citizens?” the mayor questions.
In his letter, Vallès specifically requests that access be enabled to the urban forest of Volpelleres and other areas within the Collserola park, such as Pi d’en Xandri and Torrenegra. The intention is to allow the residents of Sant Cugat to enjoy the outdoors again without compromising the necessary health measures.
Finally, the mayor concludes his communication with a hopeful message: “We trust that our request will be received with sensitivity and institutional responsibility.” The community awaits a positive response from the Generalitat Government regarding this crucial request for their quality of life.
