A new approach to mental health care

In a significant advance towards improving mental health care, Santa Coloma de Gramenet has inaugurated the Salut Àgora space, a pioneering initiative aimed at transforming the traditional model of psychiatric hospitalization. This new centre, located in the heart of the city, has the primary objective of reducing prolonged hospitalizations and fostering a community environment that supports individuals with severe mental health issues.

Salut Àgora is not just a physical place; it is a space for life and connection. According to Maria Roviralta, the project's coordinating nurse, this centre is designed to be flexible and welcoming, allowing patients to feel comfortable interacting with the professionals who provide them support. The multidisciplinary team includes psychiatrists, nurses, and occupational therapists, all committed to offering comprehensive, patient-centred care.

The inauguration of the space was celebrated by numerous healthcare professionals and local community members. Judit Viñals, director of the Barcelonès Nord and Maresme health sector, emphasized that Salut Àgora represents a renewed commitment from the Department of Health towards a model based on human rights. This approach aligns with the international guidelines established by the WHO to improve the quality of mental health care.

Mireia González, mayor of Santa Coloma de Gramenet, highlighted that having resources like Salut Àgora is fundamental to strengthening the social fabric of the city. “The strength of Santa Coloma lies in its community,” González stated during her inaugural speech. The creation of this space responds to an urgent need within the current context and aims to empower citizens through more accessible and humane care.

The team behind Salut Àgora has worked hard to design an environment that promotes not only physical but also emotional well-being. With individualized plans tailored to each patient, the aim is to enhance their autonomy and social integration. The intervention takes place both within the centre and in the patient's family environment, thus ensuring effective continuity of care.

As Santa Coloma moves towards this new paradigm in mental health, it is hoped that initiatives like Salut Àgora will serve as a replicable model in other communities. The transformation of psychiatric care towards a more humane and community-based approach could mark a turning point in how this crucial issue is addressed.
