The Barcelona City Council will carry out 24 interventions in public spaces during the summer, aiming to alleviate the inconveniences caused by large ongoing projects. The works include resurfacing and significant traffic closures.
During this summer, Barcelona will undertake a total of 24 works on its streets, a notably lower figure than the 38 last year. This decision has been made taking advantage of the usual decrease in mobility that characterises the summer months. The main objective is to complete several important projects that are in their final phase and promise to improve the quality of life in the city.
Paving and scheduled closures
Starting from 12 July, paving works will begin on Balmes Street, between Plaza Molina and General Mitre. This project will close a chapter that began in autumn 2024, allowing this road to reopen to traffic after months of renovation. The completion of these works is eagerly awaited by residents, who have endured the inconveniences for a long time.
Significant impacts on Meridiana
One of the most relevant works will be the resurfacing of Meridiana, which will take place between 27 July and mid-August. This project will be developed in two phases: first, it will affect the direction towards the city centre, restricting access to several cross streets until 7 August. Subsequently, from 7 to 14 August, work will be carried out in the opposite direction. These interventions will inevitably generate traffic congestion, which could affect thousands of daily drivers.
New alterations at key points like Plaza Espanya
Plaza Espanya will also experience significant changes due to works related to the L8 line of the Ferrocarrils. From 6 July to 7 September, the available lanes will be reduced, further complicating traffic in this crucial area. Additionally, other streets such as Llança will be temporarily closed to facilitate auxiliary tasks related to a microtunnel.
Nocturnal closures and public transport diversions
From 19 July to 6 August, there will be nocturnal closures on the Ronda de Dalt to advance its coverage between Vallcarca and IES Vall d’Hebron. Although these works are scheduled for less busy hours, they are expected to significantly affect those who use this main route during those dates. On the other hand, tram lines T4, T5, and T6 will experience interruptions from 3 July to 13 September, necessitating the implementation of alternative bus routes.
Proactive maintenance for future urban needs
Despite the discomfort caused by these temporary works, Laia Bonet, the deputy mayor responsible for Urbanism and Mobility, has emphasised their importance: "They are necessary to gain pedestrian space and improve our public system." In this sense, each intervention is designed not only to repair existing infrastructures but also to prepare Barcelona for future challenges related to climate change.
As this summer of road reforms progresses, it is clear that Barcelona is betting on significant urban transformation. Although the inconveniences are inevitable during these intensive work periods, the long-term benefits promise to make daily life more bearable for all its inhabitants.
