The construction of the central towers of the Sagrada Família has incorporated 24 tonnes of Loctite adhesive, revolutionising its building. This advancement allows for unprecedented precision in joining stone and steel.

The iconic central towers of the Sagrada Família have been constructed using an innovative adhesive system that has transformed the building process. The company Henkel, known for its Loctite products, has provided a specialised adhesive that allows for the joining of stone and steel panels, increasing both the speed and precision of construction.

A Technological Advancement in Architecture

This method is not akin to the traditional ‘Super Glue’ used at home; it is Loctite EA 9497, specifically designed to tackle the structural challenges presented by a project as complex as the Sagrada Família. According to Henkel, this product has been fundamental in completing one of the most ambitious milestones in contemporary architecture.

Environmental and Structural Challenges

The location of the Sagrada Família, just three kilometres from the sea, implies constant exposure to difficult environmental conditions. High humidity and thermal variations between winter and summer create continuous cycles of expansion and contraction in the materials. Additionally, vibrations caused by the underground metro add another level of challenge to its construction.

To ensure structural resistance against these adverse factors, 24 tonnes of Loctite adhesive have been used. Each of the 826 panels that make up the towers requires approximately 30 kilograms, thus ensuring that each element is firmly bonded.

Accelerating the Construction Process

The use of Loctite EA 9497 not only improves the quality of assembly but also accelerates the construction process by up to ten times faster compared to traditional methods. This capability is crucial for supporting loads equivalent to up to 100,000 people per square metre, which is essential for maintaining the stability of key elements such as the large cross on the main tower.

One Hundred Years of Innovation in the Service of Art

Through this collaboration between Henkel and the responsible architects, it is demonstrated how 21st-century innovations can be respectfully integrated into projects initiated over 140 years ago. The president of Henkel Ibérica, Adrian Orbea, highlighted: “The Sagrada Família is an inspiring example where an ambitious vision meets technological expertise.” This synergy not only respects the architectural legacy but also drives progress to new heights.
