As the Tour de France approaches, Granollers is implementing free parking solutions to mitigate mobility disruptions. The event, starting July 6, will significantly impact local traffic.

Granollers is gearing up for a major disruption as it hosts the third stage of the prestigious Tour de France on July 6. The city will experience significant traffic limitations starting from July 3 due to preparations and the race itself. To alleviate these challenges, local authorities have announced that paid parking facilities will be opened for free during this period.

Free parking initiatives launched

The decision to offer complimentary parking comes as a response to anticipated congestion caused by the influx of visitors and media personnel. Jordi Romea, director of the stage start in Granollers, estimates that between 500 and 600 vehicles associated with the event will flood into the area before the official race kickoff at noon. To accommodate residents and visitors alike, all blue and green zones will be suspended from Friday until Monday.

Enhanced public transport options

The city has also arranged for enhanced public transport services to facilitate access during this busy time. A shuttle bus service will connect visitors from a designated parking area at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, located in nearby Montmeló, back to Granollers’ city center. This service will run every 20 minutes, ensuring that those who park outside can still enjoy the festivities without hassle.

Community engagement through activities

A vibrant atmosphere is expected in Granollers as various events are planned around the race day. A ‘village’ will open at 9:00 AM, featuring activities such as youth cycling races and promotional caravans distributing merchandise before the main event begins. This community engagement aims not only to celebrate cycling but also to foster local pride.

Traffic management strategies in place

The logistical challenges posed by such a high-profile event have prompted city officials to implement strict traffic management measures. Starting Sunday evening, barriers will be erected along key routes, prohibiting parking in affected areas leading up to race day. Residents are advised that street access may be limited until midday on July 4.

A call for reduced commercial activity

While telecommuting cannot be mandated by local authorities, they strongly encourage businesses within affected zones to consider minimizing operations on race day. Laura Llavina, head of Mobility at Granollers City Council, emphasized that avoiding unnecessary deliveries would help ease congestion during this busy period.

The excitement surrounding this international sporting event brings both opportunities and challenges for Granollers residents. As they prepare for an influx of tourists and media attention, many locals are hopeful that these measures will ensure a smooth experience while showcasing their city’s charm.
