An anticipated return for travellers
After a prolonged closure that extended from December last year, the lobby of Sant Joan Despí train station reopened its doors this Saturday. This reopening is a relief for the thousands of users who daily utilise this important transport route in the Baix Llobregat region.
The closure was a direct consequence of a problematic occupation, which not only affected the operability of the space but also caused significant damage to the facilities, including the lobby's ceiling. The situation became complicated when a second occupation took place, prompting local authorities to intervene to restore order and ensure safety in the area.
The collaboration between the Sant Joan Despí City Council, Renfe, and Adif was crucial in resolving this situation. After the upper floor was vacated, essential initial works were carried out before allowing access to the lobby. According to official sources from Renfe, these interventions included the treatment of dampness, painting, and the installation of a protective mesh on the ceiling.
Despite the progress made with these preliminary works, much remains to be done. Authorities are currently assessing the necessary repairs both on the upper floor and in other areas of the building. However, the priority was to ensure a safe reopening for all travellers.
For six months, users had to access the station from a side entrance and lacked basic services such as ticket vending machines. This change not only affected the daily comfort of passengers but also raised concerns about the safety and functionality of the public space.
With the reactivation of the lobby, it is expected that regular services will be fully restored and the user experience will be significantly improved. The station is a crucial point for many local residents, and its recovery is seen as a positive step towards normalisation after a complicated period.
As additional planned works progress, both Renfe and Adif have expressed their commitment to maintaining high standards regarding safety and functionality. The coming months will be crucial to ensure that all necessary aspects are adequately addressed.
