The Generalitat of Catalonia has announced a special operation to ensure safety during the Sant Joan festival, scheduled for the night of June 23 to 24. The Minister of Interior, Núria Parlon, highlighted this year's slogan: “Don't ruin the celebration”, which aims to promote a safe and responsible celebration. This year, the number of firefighters and rural agents will be increased in response to the high incidents recorded in previous years.
Reinforcement of Emergency Services
The Bombers de la Generalitat will increase their contingent by 50%, aiming to address potential fires and emergencies. In 2025, firefighters responded to 1,356 alerts during this festivity, underscoring the need for reinforcement. Additionally, the PROCICAT territorial plan will be activated to manage any incidents that may arise.
The Rural Agents Corps will also deploy a special team with 200 personnel, focusing their efforts on fire prevention and controlling the improper use of pyrotechnic materials. It is reminded that using fireworks is prohibited within 400 meters of forested or agricultural areas.
As part of this campaign, Civil Protection has issued recommendations to minimize risks associated with the use of firecrackers. Among the advice is to buy pyrotechnics from authorized places and to avoid launching rockets near people or animals. Specific guidelines have also been designed to protect those with sensory hypersensitivity and pets.
Due to the holiday, a significant increase in vehicular traffic is expected in Catalonia. It is estimated that around 610,000 vehicles will leave the metropolitan area between Friday the 19th and Sunday the 21st, with a massive return expected the day after the celebration. To mitigate congestion, additional lanes and temporary restrictions for heavy vehicles will be implemented.
From June 22 to 28, authorities will carry out an intensive campaign against driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs. The checks will be random and distributed throughout the Catalan territory.
Given the high demand expected during this festive night, the CAT112 service will have a special operation that will include up to 133 professionals. This increase will allow for effective handling of calls during one of the most critical moments of the year alongside New Year's Eve.
As this emblematic celebration in Catalonia approaches, authorities emphasize the importance of not only enjoying but also doing so with responsibility and respect for others.
