This Thursday, a joint operation between the Mossos d’Esquadra, the National Police, and the Local Police carried out the eviction of two occupied warehouses in the former Pulligan factory, located in Canet de Mar. The action was carried out without incidents and responds to a decree aimed at ensuring the safety of both the occupants and the neighbourhood.
Coordinated operation to ensure safety
The eviction began early in the morning with a strong police presence. Three vans from the Arro unit, four vehicles from the Mossos d’Esquadra, four units from the Local Police, and a canine unit participated. According to the authorities, both warehouses presented serious structural deficiencies and did not meet the necessary hygiene and health conditions to be inhabited.
Mayor Pere Xirau explained that this decision was made to protect the people residing in these spaces and the neighbourhood. “The reason for the eviction was basically for safety reasons,” said Xirau, who also highlighted the deteriorated state of the roofs and structures, as well as the illegal connections to the electrical network detected on site.
A total of thirteen people were residing in the evicted warehouses. Since last Tuesday, they had been informed about the scheduled eviction. Most had already left the premises before the operation began, while those who remained left voluntarily when the police arrived.
Xirau expressed his concern for the well-being of these individuals after the eviction. However, he also called for citizen vigilance in the event that they seek other places to settle. “The situation is complex, and we must be alert,” he added.
Additionally, it was revealed that many occupants had police records accumulating more than 130 complaints, which could be linked to several criminal acts that have occurred recently in that area of the municipality.
Once the eviction was completed, the accesses to the warehouses were boarded up and sealed to prevent new occupations. The Local Police have announced that they will reinforce surveillance in this area to prevent future incidents related to illegal occupations.
Starting Friday, work will begin to demolish the evicted warehouses, starting with the building located on Ravalet Street. This action is part of the municipal commitment to improve the safety and health of the urban environment.
The issue of illegal occupations has been growing in various Catalan towns. In this context, Canet de Mar is no exception; however, such interventions aim to mitigate risks both for those inhabiting these spaces and for nearby residents.
“It is not only about protecting those who live here; it is also our responsibility to care for the general well-being of the neighbourhood,” concluded Xirau.
