The Gràcia district has decided to permanently maintain the changes to traffic on the Travessera de Gràcia, initially implemented in October 2023. This measure aims to prevent vehicles from using this road as a shortcut to cross the neighbourhood without stopping, which has led to a notable decrease in traffic in the area.
Positive impact on local mobility
According to a study conducted by the Mobility department, the new traffic directions have managed to reduce traffic by up to 87% between Gran de Gràcia and Torrent de l’Olla, and 77% between Torrent de l’Olla and Milà i Fontanals. In some sections, such as between Via Augusta and Gran de Gràcia, the reduction even reaches 93%.
The First Deputy Mayor and district councillor, Laia Bonet, has expressed her satisfaction with these results. “The changes have significantly reduced traffic and prevented episodes of congestion,” she stated. She also highlighted that the aim is to transform the Travessera into a civic axis that promotes pedestrian mobility and improves accessibility for residents.
Despite the change in traffic directions, no significant increase has been observed in adjacent streets. For example, a 59% reduction has been recorded at the intersection between Bonavista and Torrent de l’Olla.
In addition to consolidating the traffic changes, a new traffic light will be installed at the junction of Travessera de Gràcia and the streets Milà i Fontanals and Torrent d’en Vidalet. This action responds to a community request to facilitate connections towards the Besòs direction.
Furthermore, bus 114 will adapt its route to improve access to the new provisional Mercat de l’Abaceria located on Passeig de Sant Joan. This adjustment is part of the effort to better integrate public transport options with the new traffic dynamics of the neighbourhood.
The traffic modifications are an integral part of the broader project that includes the works at Mercat de l’Abaceria. These reforms aim not only to optimise vehicle flow but also to revitalise public spaces to encourage community activities. With these actions, Gràcia is moving towards more sustainable and people-centred mobility.
