A strike that could affect thousands of visitors
The city of Girona is facing a crisis in waste management, as workers from the collection service have decided to begin an indefinite strike starting from 4 May. This decision comes at a critical moment, just before the start of the famous exhibition Temps de Flors, which attracts thousands of tourists between 9 and 17 May.
The works council of Girona + Neta has expressed its discontent over the stagnation in negotiations for the collective agreement, which has seen no progress for more than a year and a half. In a recent vote, 88% of the staff supported the decision to strike, reflecting deep dissatisfaction with current working conditions.
Despite having voiced their concerns to the City Council since 13 March, the workers claim to have received no response whatsoever. This silence has been interpreted as a complete lack of willingness to engage in dialogue on the part of the council.
The refuse collectors have pointed out several problematic issues regarding the working conditions imposed by the current contract. These include drastic changes in schedules, the obligation to work on public holidays, and a salary increase that does not align with the consumer price index (CPI). Additionally, they criticize the inadequacy and poor adaptation of the current vehicle fleet for carrying out their tasks efficiently.
As the deadline for initiating the strike approaches, the workers are organizing a gathering in front of the City Council to make their demands heard. In this protest, they plan to directly demand the active participation of the responsible councillor and municipal technicians in the negotiation tables.
They are not only seeking to improve their working conditions; they also want to ensure an adequate service for all citizens and visitors. The situation raises serious doubts about how waste collection and treatment will be managed during one of the most important events on the Girona tourist calendar.
